Hotel KurrajongCanberra ACT Australia
Once a hotel for Labor party politicians, Hotel Kurrajong in Canberra has been recently refurbished by SJB Interiors. The design approach was to build upon the character and remaining architectural features of its surroundings celebrating the glamour of the 1920’s period in which the hotel was built. The bespoke interior design and restoration is seen in the use of Catherine Martin rugs and fabrics as well as other glamorous detailing in the foyer, all of which harken back to the Great Gatsby era. Using cues from this period, gold leaf and black finishes shine against the almost tobacco-coloured walls. Dark timber joinery adds another layer of robust design richness. Of the 147 guestrooms, 26 are heritage listed and all are decorated with a modern interpretation. A softer colour palette of peacock blue and oyster is seen in SJB- designed custom carpets, linen and understated fixtures and finishes. The result is a refined, contemporary touch that preserves history and portrays authenticity.
