The Regent Theatre

The Regent Theatre plays a vital role in the City’s economy and heritage, with the theatre being both a national and international leader in the arts industry. SJB Planning assisted Lovell Chen in obtaining a revised planning permit which met recent demands for theatre/venue spaces that have seen a shift towards more intimate venues, where seating is closer to the stage, improving the audience experience.

The Regent Theatre dress circle was set back a minimum of 27.2 metres from the stage, with this development reducing the setback, while also creating more flexibility with four seating ‘modes’ for 1560 to 2297 patrons (up from the current 2162 seats).

The works also saw that the public amenities and foyer areas were updated while respecting the heritage significance of this prestigious venue.

Lovell Chen was also awarded a ‘Heritage Architecture – Creative Adaption’ award at the 2020 Victorian Architecture Awards for the renovation.
