Village ParkParkville VIC Australia
Parkville Gardens is an urban renewal precinct located on a 20-hectare site in Parkville, formerly the home of the Athlete’s Village for the 2006 Commonwealth Games. The project comprised of two separate phases:
- Pre-Games: establishment of an athlete’s village completed in early 2006 and to house approximately 6,000 athletes during the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games;
- Post-Games: the staged redevelopment of the site for an integrated residential estate, known as Parkville Gardens.
The development included a mix of low-rise urban villas, townhouses, terraces, apartments and restored heritage buildings. Since the completion of the Games the project has been redeveloped as a residential community with recreational open spaces, squares, plazas, public parking, approximately 1,200 dwellings and an aged care facility and 20% of the residential stock is designated for social housing.
Most recently SJB Planning successfully lead the client and project team through the preparation of Melbourne Planning Scheme Amendment C281 which sought to amend the Incorporated Document that controls development in Parkville Gardens to facilitate an alternate urban design concept for the remaining stages of development. This work associated with Amendment C281 was the subject of review by an independently appointed Planning Panel. The Panel endorsed the proposed amendment, which formed the basis of the Minister for Planning’s approval of Amendment C281.
SJB continue to work closely with the project team and stakeholders to negotiate a positive outcome for all parties and facilitate the delivery of the final stages, including assisting and advising The Village Park Consortium through the remainder of the planning approvals process for this exciting project.
