William StreetBeaconsfield NSW Australia
Bringing a new standard of worker amenity to the small inner-city suburb of Beaconsfield, 5km south of the Sydney CBD, William Street is an adaption of a two-storey brick building into a commercial creative office space. The project spans two levels with an additional mezzanine and a childcare centre accommodating 99 children in a new rooftop addition. The entire façade of the existing structure was transformed with a new finish in a bold, rich jungle green that updates the building with a contemporary look and feel.
This subtle conversion translates the suburb’s light industrial heritage into a dynamic workspace with a robust and expansive shell that can be adapted to diverse commercial tenancy requirements. Features include lozenge profile concrete columns supporting an impressive 6.8 metre double height space, curved steel stairwell, polished concrete floors, plinths and exposed services with perforated metal detailing.
Maximising its north-facing aspect, the upper level child care centre incorporates 695sqm of open rooftop landscaping to provide an engaging and explorative outdoor play space fashioned from tactile natural materials such as sandstone boulders, recycled timber sleepers, sand pits and mulch, alongside herb/veggie and flower gardens. Indoor play spaces are open plan and highly flexible with a contemporary-industrial material palette that references elements of the jungle green while beautiful birch plywood joinery provides a sense of rawness and warmth throughout.
